Name/Surname:
Heather Haley
City/Country: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Film title: Dying for the Pleasure
Running time: 10 min.
Brief film synopsis: Employing a poem-as-script
strategy, "Dying For the Pleasure" is a darkly humorous,
kaleidoscopic trip down Memory Lane, the car a metaphor for power,
an extension of desire. Once behind the wheel, we are transformed
into a cyborg of sorts, driven to deliverance. Set at the intersection
of flesh and metal, beyond road rage and autoeroticism, Dying
for the Pleasure explores a woman's dread of, and terrible infatuation
with, the car and car culture. |

Victor Barbieri
City/Country: Corte Madera CA - USA
Film title: Boy with a ball
Running time: 58 sec. (sound)
Brief film synopsis: Boy with a ball explores the
underlying tensions of adolescent sexuality, its incompleteness,
it rising sensuality, its latent rebellions, and its compelling
ambiguities.
Film title: Untitled No.
2 (babies)
Running time: 6 min. 05 sec. (silent)
Brief film synopsis: In "Untitled No. 2 (Babies)"
(2004), Barbieri turned his camera on young children, one by one.
Some look back with curiosity and pleasure, others with irritation
or distress. The heartbreaking openness and vulnerability of their
faces does not prevent our seeing foreshadowed in them an astonishing
range of manners of meeting life. To mirror to us the very humanity
we prefer to deny may be the last true function remaining to portraiture.

Name/Surname:
Alice Gussoni
City/Country: Rome - Italy
Film title: Cuore Malato
Running time: 6 min.
Brief film synopsis: Biological metaphor shifted
form to inhabit emotional states - longing and despair - describes
the system rush toward decadence in spite of its resistance to die.
The heart looks like a flower, with the blow-flies buzzing round
and the maggots, which oozed out like a heavy liquid. The forms
disappeared and become no more than a dream, a sketch that slowly
falls upon the forgotten canvas, that the artist completes from
memory alone. |

Name/surname:
Karenina Fabrizzi
City/Country: Italy/Argentina
Film title: Penisneid
Running time: 6 min. 02 sec.
Brief film synopsis: An aspect of Sigmund Freud´s
developmental theory. Freud believed that during development girls
had to switch from having the mother as the love object to having
the father as the love object: and also switch from the clitoris
to the vagina as the main genital zone. At about the age of four,
Freud believed that girls first discovered they lacked a penis.
The girl will blame her mother or the lack of a penis and the consequent
hurt to her own self-esteem. This causes the girl to give up clitoral
sexuality, and turn to the father as love object. This aspect of
Freud’s theory has received a great deal of criticism, particularly
from feminist psychoanalysts. In Freudian Theory this repressed
desire of females to posses a penis is a cause of feelings of inferiority
and psychic conflict. |

Name/Surname:
Luca Curci – Fabiana Roscioli
City/Country: Italy
Film title: impossible.language
Running time: 11 min. 44 sec.
Brief film synopsis: Luca Curci e Fabiana Roscioli
La quotidianità sembra evolversi, accanto all'etica

Name/Surname:
Nahed Awwad
City/Country: Ramallah/Occupied Palestine
Film title: Going for a ride?
Running time: 15 min.
Brief film synopsis: The 15 minutes Video is a
collaborative work between two Palestinian artists: Vera Tamari
who's art installation Going for a Ride (23 June 2002) was documented
and produced on Video by filmmaker Nahed Awwad. The video is based
on the construction of the installation which is a statement on
the aggressive and deliberate crushing of hundreds of privately-owned
cars by the Israeli tanks in Ramallah and El-Bireh during the incursions
in the two towns in 2002. The focus is on crushed cars because of
the powerful meaning cars usually carry: freedom, the open road,
travel and movement. In the video the cars were brought to life
again somehow by searching into the memories of those who rode them. |

Name/Surname:
Richard Journo
City/Country: Italy/UK
Film title: Traffic Jam
Running time: 18 min. 30 sec.
Brief film synopsis: Traffic Jam is part of a series
of videos shot in India, Nepal, Thailand and France between July
and August 2002. The work shows a massive traffic jam encountered
on the road to Bihar, India. Because of the Indian transportation
system to get stuck in a traffic jam is quite common, not only in
big cities but also along country roads where hundreds and hundreds
of lorries and trucks line up for miles and miles. The occurrence
is so frequent that a full way of life spans out of being trapped
for long hours in the middle of nowhere. The camera point of view,
going against the traffic flow, explores the various ways people
confront the same predicament. Some lye passively waiting, others
occupy themselves with some manual job, other sleep forever oblivious
to the surroundings. There is nowhere to go, squeezed as they are
between their colourful lorries and the indifferent vast fields
around them. Their entrapment becomes almost a metaphor of the human
condition: there is no escape unless you are prepared to abandon
Othe jam¹ and fly free in the opposite direction. The video
was shot in July 2002 with a JVC mini-DV handy cam and edited on
Final Cut Pro between December 2003 and January 2004. |

Name/Surname:
Route - Nini HU and Joshue OTT
City/Country: New York City - USA
Film title: Strings
Running time: 15 min.
Brief film synopsis: In Route's new video installation,
Strings, the dualities of life are honored and made symbolically
poetic. In manipulated time, strings of movement and tension explore
the relationship between attachment and freedom, chaos and order,
togetherness and separation. Sculptural complexity results from
the tracing of movement in time, but this transient complexity eventually
returns to a singular reality-one's self. Strings illustrates the
necessary coexistence of life's dualities and invites the viewer
to gain acceptance of this balance. |

Name/Surname:
Delalex Gilles & Wessel-Cessieux Thomas
City/Country: Paris - France
Film title: Metro: Paris - Hong Kong underground
Running time: 4 min.
Brief film synopsis: Metro evokes an improbable
metroline stretched between Paris and Hong Kong. The line is 10
000 kilometre-long and constituted of only two stops, one at the
beginning, one at the end. It unfolds as a tube city, a single corridor
remaining underground and offering no possible transfer or exit
between the two metropolises. The video offers an overview of this
fictional city by focussing on the mechanical movement passengers
through corridors and coaches. The blend of black rubber, white
ceramic tiles, metal gates and series of over-lit faces give the
video the feeling of a twenties expressionist movie. The entire
film is made of one second-video loops, each composed of 5 still
frames taken with a digital camera using continuous shooting. The
effect is that of a stroboscopic sequence advancing incrementally
by means of repetition. |

Name/Surname:
Maria Paschalidou
City/Country: Chicago - USA
Film title: Voice mail 2001-2004
Running time: 20 min.
Brief film synopsis: Voice mail 2001-2004 is a
digital video that combines messages, in the forms of sounds, noises,
songs and several ‘stories’/narratives left on my personal
answering machine during the years of 2001-2004 with domestic and
exterior images and video recordings of my residence in Chicago.
It includes messages in both of the two languages, Greek and English
as well as one song in Serbian language. Voice mail 2001-2004 portrays
the ‘one way’ type of communication defined by the answering
machine as a result of the intentional or the physical absence of
the receiver. It is a parade of fragmented
stories, incidents, continuities and interruptions of communication
created and produced exclusively by the usage of the answering machine.
The sounds of different each time voices entering the empty space
of the house as well as its surrounding external space produce a
cinematic perspective of multiple daily happenings and narratives. |

Corinne Fhima
City/Country: Paris - France
Film title: Odalisque
Running time: 4 min.
Brief film synopsis: Odalisque is a video film
made up of a succession of photographic and filmic images about
meat and flesh. The band is a mixture of music baroque, sound effects
of weapons, and noise of washing. These "images" result
from my research figure around "the identity" (female,
sexual, religious, and social), that I incorporate in my work. The
pig, as an epicurienne figure par excellence, is also present in
my works, and it is through this emblematic animal that focus, spread
the common questions and waitings. |
