Brief film synopsis: La performance, ideata e interpretata

sentimenti: ora ambigui ora trasgressivi ora teneri e insinuanti. |

Name/Surname:
Grégoire Bourdeil
City/Country: France
Film title: Empires
Running time: 12 min.
Brief film synopsis: A woman is slowly getting
closer to her window, what is she’s looking at ?... Through
her eyes the film is trying to make us get the gist of an imaginary
Empire. To do so, the video is made of a mix between "found
footages" re-shot in different screens and original super8
takes. Same for the soundtrack, where original sounds are often
“deteriorated” by some older and “used”
ones. By creating this type of “archaeological material”,
the film transforms each member of the audience into a historian,
a witness of the whole cyclic history of an empire: the “founding
murder”, the rise of the empire with a profusion of pleasures,
its decadence, and then a last its fall and the set up by force
of a new regime.
Film title: digitales
Running time: 9 min.
Brief film synopsis: A murder. The Murder. The
video is about the idea of murder. Without showing directly the
act on the screen, the video is trying to recreate places, atmospheres
and feelings around the crime itself. Understand the murder through
all the changes it brings about in the visual and sound space where
it takes place. The video constantly switches between super8 film
sequences and only photography sequences. By playing so between
“motion” and “motionless”, the film never
stop to try to freeze the time on the act of murder. And whereas
images are sometimes “freezing” the time, sounds are
on the contrary trying to bring to the audience the real “time
of the crime”, the whole act that cannot be seen on photography.
Then the real purpose of the video is not to find the fingerprint
of the murderer but really the fingerprint of the murder. |

Name/Surname:
Luca Curci – Fabiana Roscioli
City/Country: Italy
Film title: impossible.language
Running time: 11 min. 44 sec.
Brief film synopsis: Luca Curci e Fabiana Roscioli
La quotidianità sembra evolversi, accanto all'etica

Luca Curci
City/Country: Italy
Film title: Still.Alone
Running time: 19 min. 50 sec.
Brief film synopsis: Still.Alone is a video project
that involved 27 artist coming from Canada, USA, Argentina, Brazil,
Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Indonesia. A project
that has been carried on for more than an year, hundred mails and
many forum has been dedicated to this project. This video bands
together shots taken in Paris, New York, London, Buenos Aires, Berlin
and Java island. The common subject is 'the megalopolis' , the new
space of collective alienation, where the lack of ideas, the incommunicability,
the incapacity to love and to understand each other, the interior
vacuum and the social incapability of the individual find fertile
land to grow up and where it seems more and more perceptible the
development of this lack of relation between the individual and
the space itself. So, alienation, that generated and is generated
by contemporary insanity, is the main character of this video. |

MUTAFORMA (Daniele Tito - Evilia Di Lonardo)
City/Country: POTENZA – ITALY
Film title: SPEED MUTATION
Running time: 4 min. 14 sec.
Brief film synopsis: SPEED MUTATION is the eye
that watches, observes and changes feelings in audiovisual stimuli;
it analyzes the transformation of the sensorial world in a deep
constant new elaboration. Speed Mutation is the technology, the
biotechnology, the plastic surgery, the genetic mutations, that
every day define the borders between reality and artifice, organic
and inorganic world. Images follow one another in a phrenetic rhythm
and, sometimes, in a violent sollicitation of the retina. The body,
the society are changeable, places full of new elaboration and technological
contamination but also full of rejections and unconscious fears. |

Running time: 7 min. 56 sec.
Brief film synopsis: The film re-constructs the
composition of a painting from the collection of the National Museum
in Sweden by the School of Cranach: The Lamentation of Christ. At
first only small movements in the actors can be perceived, such
as blinking and breathing before the film launches into an unexpected
narrative direction depicting the birth of a Christ-like artefact
issued forth from Christ himself. |

City/Country: Bari - Italia
Film title: Cam in video
Running time: 2 min. 40 sec.

the concept animating this project is to create a video-portrait

Brief film synopsis: Un parco giochi, un luogo

ideale. |

Name/Surname:
Richard Journo
City/Country: Italy/UK
Film title: Traffic Jam
Running time: 18 min. 30 sec.
Brief film synopsis: Traffic Jam is part of a series
of videos shot in India, Nepal, Thailand and France between July
and August 2002. The work shows a massive traffic jam encountered
on the road to Bihar, India. Because of the Indian transportation
system to get stuck in a traffic jam is quite common, not only in
big cities but also along country roads where hundreds and hundreds
of lorries and trucks line up for miles and miles. The occurrence
is so frequent that a full way of life spans out of being trapped
for long hours in the middle of nowhere. The camera point of view,
going against the traffic flow, explores the various ways people
confront the same predicament. Some lye passively waiting, others
occupy themselves with some manual job, other sleep forever oblivious
to the surroundings. There is nowhere to go, squeezed as they are
between their colourful lorries and the indifferent vast fields
around them. Their entrapment becomes almost a metaphor of the human
condition: there is no escape unless you are prepared to abandon
Othe jam¹ and fly free in the opposite direction. The video
was shot in July 2002 with a JVC mini-DV handy cam and edited on
Final Cut Pro between December 2003 and January 2004. |

Film title: XYSex
Running time: 8 min.
Brief film synopsis: XYSex is a 4th individual

it. XYSex opens the FLESH SYSTEM triptych. In June takes place the

Government. BLACK FLESH VIDEO is a SUKA OFF commando established

Name/Surname:
GUIDO'LU
City/Country: Liège / Belgium
Film title: "petite pilule pour la Folie"
- Opérette en 36 tableaux
Running time: 15 min. 51 sec.
Brief film synopsis: "small medicine for Foolness",
Operetta in 36 parts. The work, kind of "operetta", is
a whole of 36 fractals show clips following one another right away
tightly and all together or not, which particularities are multiple
intricate connections and complicities. Each show clip, composed
of harmless theatrical made to measure moves, sets off ludic cliché,
clinical poses, critical fabulations, even of anecdotic situations.
Fiction (?) of male and female dual combinations. |

Thanos Chrysakis
City/Country: London/UK - Athens /Greece
Film title: THE WATER'S DAEMON
Running time: 16 min.
Brief film synopsis: The Daemon of Water appears
to live unnoticed, enjoying the water, itself, and also the shades
of the light. This work is actually an event, an encounter of different
entities, shades, bodies, lights, sounds, shadows, motions &
subtle changes, a dance in an unkown place. Actually, this film
has the quality of a haecceity (haecceity may be defined as an 'atmosphere'
in the sense both of a particular meteorological configuration and
of a given ambience or affective milieu - Ronald Bogue). |

Name/Surname:
Paul Amlehn
City/Country: New Zeland
Film title: Loakal
Running time: 19 min.
Brief film synopsis: Loakal has a tripartite structure;
it is comprised of three separate parts which are conceptually and
rhythmically linked to function as a large whole. Part One utilizes
ultrasonic footage of a foetus in utero (my son, Cassiel) along
with vocalization inspired by the glossographic “holy writings”
of Jeanne Tripier (a spiritualist medium and schizophrenic incarcerated
in the asylum of Maison-Blanche, near Paris, in 1934). Part Two
utilizes the imprisoned time of a still image (taken from my participation
in a performance ritual) in conjunction with vocalization altered
by electronic processes. Part Three is the result of a collaboration
between digital video and malfunctioning computer technologies,
which destabilize, disrupt, and reconfigure the visual field. |

Name/Surname:
Elisabeth Mathisen
City/Country: Norway
Film title: Inside 4 Corners
Running time: 19 min.
Brief film synopsis: The video presents short,
logical studies located in everyday situations. These situations
have parallels in female mythology and are strongly connected to
feminine qualities of good and bad. The reconstructions are marked
by feelings of inadequacy and by the loneliness which hits you when
you find yourself the only one denying conventional and archetypal
expectations. |

Name/Surname:
Jodie Vicenta Jacobson
City/Country: Brooklyn, New York, USA
Film title: "Damp", 2003/4
Running time: 21 min.
Brief film synopsis: A bathroom backdrop, with
a composition similar to a geometric abstract painting, sets the
stage for the conceptual brushwork to begin. Over the course of
the video the bathroom fills up with steam, and empties out –
producing a mesmeric flow of water soaked air to entrance the viewer.
The intention is to make someone observe a video much as they would
a painting – investigating the space inside the flat monitor
– and watching as its wake washes over. Questions that come
about are: Can the illusionistic spaces created by a painting also
be mimicked by something as technologically advanced as a television
or projection? Can one become lost in a video the same way one loses
themself in a painting? Do people trust a television (with images
taken from reality) the same way they do a painting? Most importantly,
is the beauty revealed, hidden and revealed again, taking the viewer
to psychological spaces more abstractly related to their own psyche
than a logical narrative space? Video Courtesy of Yancey Richardson

Name/Surname:
Jawshing Arthur Liou
City/Country: Bloomington, USA
Film title: CBC (Complete Blood Counts)
Running time: 8 min. 22 sec.
Brief film synopsis: “CBC” deals with
Liou’s daughter's recent diagnosis of leukemia. The imagery
was rendered from the 1 year old patient’s body and was multiplied
hundreds to thousands of times. The composition is based on the
similarity between the cancer cells and the normal blood cells.
The use of high-definition video allows the viewer to experience
the phenomenon in detail. As a metaphor for the medical process,
the work refers to the terrifying effects of both the disease and
its treatment. |

KHALED HAFEZ
City/Country: EGYPT
Film title: IDLERS' LOGIC
Running time: 24 min.
Brief film synopsis: Since September 11, 2001 I have been
continuously collecting and using stock images of social and political
nature in my mixed media works; images of riots, confrontations,
masses in fury, images of combat, war, personal pictures of “terrorists”
and those of “simple” people of North African and Middle
Eastern features, features that would alone be enough to make their
owners suspects of terrorism and make them enemies of modernity
and of the free world. The “label” of North African,
Arab or Middle Eastern describes me as well as other Arab-Middle
Eastern artists, politicians, scientists, lay-people and idlers
scattered all over the world. |

Gökçe Akçelik
City/Country: Istanbul (Turkey) and Strasbourg
(France)
Film title: Untitled [or, there’s always some free
cheddar in a mousetrap]
Running time: 13 min. 11 sec.
Brief film synopsis: Listing of modern markers,
confrontation of representations, paradigms and languages. Mode
of the sign sending to sign. The screen does not promise anything,
safeguard perhaps, and finds its margin of freedom through which
the spectator invests and contemplates, sometimes enriched sometimes
disturbed by sound and musical interventions either as ornaments
or as the basis of an exagerated work, lacking meaning. Fragmentation
is the origin of a process base on the non obviousness of the rules
of the game and the perception requires incubation. The elements
and figures I use, are artifacts related to known references, generators
of percept. Here some figures standing on the tops of the roof,
a visual and sound litany, 9 elements and one as center. |

City/Country: Montréal. Québec, Canada
Film title: drawing the string
Running time: 3 min. 01 sec.
Brief film synopsis: A photographic series of images
taken during an archery demonstration act as slices of time cut

Name/surname:
Merita Koci
City/Country: Prishtinë/Kosovo
Film title: "Vote Merita Harxhi-Koci for President
of Kosovo"
Runinng time: 5 min.
Brief film synopsis: Merita Harxhi-Koci has come
back with a novel work that openly highlights the effort of contemporary
art to perpetuate sovereign images, not only by simulating a potential
presidential campaign, but also by rooting a more refined model
of such a campaign. The artiste topples the workings of a confined
electoral campaign that sees politicians and parties riding the
vehicle of art to create convincing and imposing images aimed towards
earning the trust of the voters being empowered. |

Name/Surname:
Gregg Simpson (Mehdi Ali is the director and producer, for Fountain
Productions)
City/Country: Vancouver, Canada
Film title: A New Arcadia: The Art of Gregg Simpson
Running time: 24 min.
Brief film synopsis: "The works of Canadian
artist Gregg Simpson (b. 1947) are explored on three different levels:
the act of making a painting; the development of a style; the evolution
of a career. The film is connecting thread and climax is an exhibition
of the artist’s paintings in a 14th-century castle in Tuscany
in May of 2000. A musician as well as an artist, Simpson was initially
inspired by Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, together with
the rainforest environment in which he grew up, where he developed
a kinship with the imagery of the West Coast Native artists. Following
several trips to Europe, where he painted and exhibited, Simpson
developed a hybrid style, combining the influence of the West Coast
landscape with the arcadian worlds of Tuscany and Provence."

Hilary Harp & Suzie Silver
City/Country: USA
Film title: The Happiest Day
Running time: 6 min.
Brief film synopsis: A Victorian fairy tale told
in the patois of an adventure video game, The Happiest Day is a
journey back to a time that never was. Meandering through a fantastical
computer-animated forest we come upon strangers enacting odd and
playful rituals. These live-action sequences are loose reenactments
of 1960's and 1970's performance artworks restaged in an Arcadian
setting. Mingling conceptual art with 19th century illustration,
live action with animation, history with fiction, this video presents
a delightful hybrid language of pleasure and longing. |

Brief film synopsis:
Uno sguardo lucido e visionario sull' identità contemporanea,
collettivo. |
